Jaipur: Police resorted to using force to disperse the crowd of students who were protesting against change in the timing of Rajasthan University central library on Tuesday. The students supported by NSUI had locked the gate of the library and staged a sit-in. The cops tried to placate them and asked them to leave the library premises. But when the students didn’t budge, the policemen lathicharged them, according to the eye-witness reports.
The students had started gathering outside the library where some NSUI leaders were observing fast in protest of the change in the timing of the RU central library. The crowd of students swelled soon. They started shouting slogans and locked the library’s gates.
The police remained a mute spectator for a while, but when the students didn’t leave the premises, they resorted to force.
“Our voice is being stifled. We will continue to protest against the Rajasthan University’s arbitrary decision to introduce a new timing for the central library. The students used to study in the night at the library, but now it will be closed by 9 pm,” said Vinod Jakhar, one of the students who set on an indefinite fast.
The new timing of the Rajasthan University (RU) library came into effect on Monday. The library used to remain open 24 hours a day, but as per the new timing, it will remain open from 9 am to 9 pm on weekdays. On Sunday and public holidays, the library will open from 10.30 am to 4.30 pm.
