Jaipur: The new timing of the Rajasthan University (RU) library came into effect on Monday. The library used to remain open 24 hours a day, but as per the new timing, it will remain open from 9 am to 9 pm on weekdays. On Sunday and public holidays, the library will open from 10.30 am to 4.30 pm. The students intensified their protest on Monday. They locked the library and staged a sit-in. The protest is being organized by NSUI. Heavy police force was deployed on the university premises to maintain law and order. The students had been protesting for the past four days. When the NSUI leaders warned of an aggressive protest on Monday, the cops rounded some of them up.

Some student leaders including Vinod Jakhar, Mahesh Samota and Mukesh Choudhary are observing an indefinite fast against changing the RU library timing.

“We will keep protesting until RU administration withdraws its decision,” said Jakhar.

A notice to change the timing of the library was issued by the Rajasthan University administration on Tuesday last week.

The students termed the decision to be arbitrary and locked the gates to the library on Tuesday. The university administration argued that a high-level committee decided to change the timing.

“It will ensure that we can keep the library clean and manage it better,” said a university officer.
