JAIPUR: An Independent candidate has yet again emerged victorious in Rajasthan University (RU) student union elections. This time, Nirmal Choudhary has been elected president. He won by a huge margin and defeated another independent candidate Niharika Jorwal – the daughter of Rajasthan minister of state Murali Lal Meena.
According to preliminary reports, Nirmal received 4043 votes, while Niharika received 2578 votes. Ritu Barala of NSUI and Narendra Yadav of ABVP bagged 2010 votes and 988 votes respectively.
The counting of votes for the apex panel of Rajasthan University started around 1 pm. Initially, the fight was very close, but Nirmal soon gained a strong lead.
A crowd of Niharika Jorwal’s supporters started gathering outside the Rajasthan University campus following which a heavy police force was deployed to maintain law and order. Barricades were put up on the JLN Road to control the crowd.
Nirmal started campaigning for the elections about six months ago. The caste factor also helped as the maximum number of votes belong to the OBC category. NSUI had played the caste card, but Nirmal’s one-on-one campaigning proved more effective.
The Rajasthan University (RU) administration will soon announce the results officially. The results for all four constituent colleges – Maharaja College, Maharani College, Commerce College and Rajasthan College have already been announced.
