Jaipur: Depressed over brinjal crop being damaged due to cold wave, a 48-year-old farmer committed suicide by hanging himself at his agriculture farm in Rajsamand district of Rajasthan on Sunday.

His wife found him hanging following which neighbours rushed him to a hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. The police have launched an investigation.

The incident took place in Pipali Acharyan village of Rajsmand district. The farmer identified as Lehrulal, was tending to his brinjal crop on land measuring about four bighas.

He went to his agriculture farm on Sunday morning and found that most of the crop had been damaged by cold wave. His family members say that it depressed him and drove him to take the extreme step. He tied a rope from a tree in the middle of his agriculture farm and hanged himself.

His wife Gauri Devi went to the agriculture farm around 11 am and found him hanging. She started screaming from help following which farmers from nearby agriculture farms rushed there. They got the body down and brought Lehrulal to a hospital where he was declared dead.

The family members say that Lehrulal was under debts.

The Congress government had recently announced to waive off debts of farmers in the state, but it seems to have had little impact.
