Jaipur: The state government reversed the name of help centers at village panchayat and panchayat samiti level to ‘Rajiv Gandhi Seva Kendra’ from ‘Atal Seva Kendra’ on Sunday. The original name of the help centers was Rajiv Gandhi Seva Kendra but the BJP government changed it to Atal Seva Kendra after coming into power in 2014.

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said on Sunday that BJP has the mentality of changing names, so they changed it from Rajiv Gandhi to Atal Seva Kendra after coming into power in 2014. The Congress is not like that. Both the personalities including late Rajiv Gandhi and late Atal Bihari Vajpayee have received Bharat Ratna and are equally respectable.

Gehlot said that they wanted to keep the name as ‘Rajiv Gandhi Atal Seva Kendra’ but as per the high court orders, they are changing it to the Rajiv Gandhi Seva Kendra.

Rajasthan has nearly 10,000 Seva Kendras at village panchayat and panchayat Samiti levels which provide public utility services to rural people.

Before the BJP government came to power, the help centers name used to be ‘Rajiv Gandhi Seva Kendra’. It was changed to ‘Atal Seva Kendra’ during the Vasundhara Raje government in 2014.

Former CM Raje changed the name to tribute the former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his birth anniversary but the decision was protested in the court by Congress supporters.

Congress leader Sanyam Lodha filed a petition in 2015 against the BJP led government for allegedly disrespecting former prime minister late Rajiv Gandhi by changing the names of the help centers to Atal Seva Kendra.
