Jodhpur: Ex-Rajmata Krishna Kumari passes away at 95

She was admitted in the hospital on Sunday after she suffered a heart attack. She was being kept on a ventilator at Goyal Hospital in Jodhpur.

Jaipur: Former Rajmata of Marwar royal family and mother of ex-Maharaja Gaj Singh died while undergoing treatment at a hospital around 1.50 am on Tuesday. She was admitted in the hospital on Sunday after she suffered a heart attack. She was being kept on a ventilator at Goyal Hospital in Jodhpur. She has been suffering from a prolonged illness. The final rituals will be performed on Tuesday.

Krishna Kumari was the princess from Dhrangadhra royal family in Gujarat. She was married to Maharaja Hanwant Singh of Marwar royal family in 1943. She had three children – Chandresh Kumari, Shailash Kumari and Gaj Singh. She fought Lok Sabha elections in 1971 and won with a record margin of votes.

After Hanwant Singh died in a plane crash in 1952, she shouldered the responsibility of looking after the royal families. She sent Gaj Singh abroad for education and looked after the family’s vast financial resources.

Krishna Kumari was a pioneer in raising awareness against the tradition of veil worn by Hindu women. She was very popular among the people of Jodhpur. People came forward to support her when she fought the Lok Sabha election.
