Jaipur ranked the best city in country for pedestrians

While the survey ranked Jaipur first in terms of the availabity of footpath, the ground reality seems completely different. Encroachment on footpaths is a major issue in Jaipur. Most footpaths have been encroached upon by vendors and shopkeepers.

Jaipur: Jaipur is the best city for pedestrians among the top 20 cities in the country, according to Ease of Moving Index released by the union transport ministry on Thursday.

The report says that Jaipur has footpath at 65% of the places in the city, making it easier for pedestrians to move around.

However, the share of pedestrians has reduced to 11 percent. It was earlier 22 percent. The lack of public transport is being cited as the reason for the drop in the share of pedestrians in Jaipur. The public transport share has come down by 8 percent, according to the report.

Other cities that figured in the report include Patna, Mumbai, Delhi, Jammu, Hyderabad, Kocchi, Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, Ahmadabad, Jabalpur, Bhopal, Chennai, Surat and Bengaluru.

Jabalpur ranked first in the country in terms of the public transport being suitable for women. In Mumbai, nearly 51 percent people use public transport, the report said adding that digital payment for public transport is the easiest in Bengaluru.
