Jaipur: Man shoots sleeping wife, stabs self in Shipra Path

The incident took place in Shanti Nagar colony of Shiprapath area in Jaipur. Nearby residents heard the gunshots following which they rushed to the couple’s house.

Jaipur: A man, identified as Jitendra Sharma (38), fired at his wife Meera Sharma alias Meenakshi (35) with a country-made gun while she was sleeping and stabbed her. Believing that she had died, he stabbed himself and attempted to commit suicide.

The incident took place in Shanti Nagar colony of Shipra Path area in Jaipur. Nearby residents heard the gunshots following which they rushed to the couple’s house. They found the man and his wife lying in a pool of blood. They rushed the couple to a hospital where they are undergoing treatment. The condition of the man and his wife is stated to be critical.

Jitendra worked as a clerk in the irrigation department. His wife was recently recruited as a IInd grade teacher  recently, but he didn’t want her to join the duty.

According to preliminary reports, the incident took place around 3 am on March 1.  Meera was sleeping when Jitendra shot at her using a country-made gun. The pallets hit her head. He then allegedly stabbed her with a knife before turning the weapon on himself. The police suspect that the accused man believed his wife had died. He then attempted to commit suicide.

On hearing gunshots, some neighbors came to their house and found them lying unconscious in their bedroom.

They had been living in the house for the past 13 years and didn’t have any children.

According to the neighbors, the man was an alcoholic and used to fight with his wife frequently. There were reports the fact that the couple didn’t have children was one of the reasons for frequent quarrels between the two. The woman also wanted to take up the job which Jitendra was opposed to.

The police however didn’t confirm what caused the man to take such a drastic step. Both are unconscious and police have not been able to record their statement.

Further investigation is going on.
