Jaipur: Rs 925-crore bank robbery bid foiled by police constable

Jaipur: Had robbers been successful to rob Axis Bank’s main branch at Ramesh Marg of C-Scheme in Jaipur, it would have been the biggest bank robbery ever committed in the country in terms of the value of the money. The robbery attempt was foiled by a police patrolling team that opened fire at the robbers.

A staging amount of money – nearly Rs 925 crore – was in the main branch of the bank when unidentified robbers attempted to carry out the daredevil loot at Axis Bank around 2.30 am on Tuesday. The number of robbers was at least 15. They had tied up the security guard.

According to preliminary reports, the police had to open fire to scare off the robbers. They, however, managed to escape from the scene. The robbery put the entire police force of the city on toes.

All the senior police officers rushed to bank and started examining the CCTV footages to identify the robbers. The CCTV footages show robbers stuffing bundles of cash into sacks.

One constable in the police patrolling team, Sitaram, showed unprecedented bravery and  took on the robbers.

Police suspect that the robbers were conducting recee of the place for the past several days.

They had tied up the security guard of a private security agency and were about to rob the bank when Sitaram opened fire.

It was yet unclear if the robbers also retaliated, but there were reports that they also returned the fire. At least 10 rounds of bullets were fired.

Sitaram was recruited in police force in 2015. He was currently posted in the police lines. He was on the security duty for the bank.

The bank’s main branch where the robbery attempt took place is in a VVIP area, located hardly a few hundred meters from the state secretariat.
