Jaipur: The customs department on Thursday night seized 343 gram of gold being smuggled from Dubai. The gold is worth about Rs 18 lakh. Since the gold’s value is less than Rs 20 lakh, the man who attempted the smuggling was not arrested; however, the officials interrogated.
This is the second case of gold smuggling with the same modus operandi detected in the past 7 days. The gold was melted in form of wires. Further investigation is going on.
The man, a resident of Rampur district in Uttar Pradesh, had arrived at Jaipur Airport in an Air India flight from Dubai. The gold was wrapped around a trolley bag. It had silver coating. On suspicion, the man was detained. When the customs officials searched his bag, the gold was found. It was seized.
In a similar case, a man was arrested after he was caught carrying gold weighting 702 gram of gold. The gold was worth Rs 36 lakh. It had been melted in form of wires and hidden in two boxes. It also had silver colour coating.
Sources said that lax laws related to gold smuggling are the cause of an increase in the number of cases.
