JAIPUR: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) intercepted a youth hailing from Nagaur and took him into custody for attempting to smuggle 1 kg 166 grams of gold. The seizure took place when the accused man landed at Jaipur airport from a Dubai flight.
The gold, with an estimated value of Rs 70 lakhs, was concealed in a tobacco box in possession of the passenger. He was arrested after an interrogation.
The man had gone to Dubai for work about three months ago and was returning to Rajasthan for the first time since his departure.
Despite the initial luggage check yielding no results, the DRI team persisted in their investigation. It was during the questioning that they noticed a tobacco box in his luggage, which the passenger claimed belonged to a friend. Upon suspicion, the box was examined, leading to the discovery of the concealed gold.
The arrested individual was presented before the court on Monday at 4 pm and subsequently sent to jail. This incident highlights the ongoing issue of gold smuggling through Gulf countries, with Jaipur airport being a prominent location for such activities despite stringent efforts by Custom and DRI teams.
