Jaipur: Rajasthan anti-terrorist squad (ATS) on Sunday busted a hawala racket and seized Rs 3.50 crore in Swaroopganj area in Sirohi district.
Two youths belonging to Gujarat who were smuggling the cash from Chandani Chowk in Delhi to Ahmedabad in a luxury car were detained for interrogation. The men, identified as Pankaj and Dinesh, were interrogated by income tax department sleuths.
ATS DIG Prafulla Kumar said that the agency got a tip-off about smuggling of hawala money from Delhi to Ahmedabad. An ATS team from Udaipur, headed by inspector Shyam Singh, tracked the vehicle and intercepted the car of the suspects.
When the car was searched, the cash was found in a specially built chamber near the hand breaks. Both were brought to the local police station for further interrogation.
“Both confessed that they work in a courier company and its manager Omprakash sent them to Delhi. They were bringing the case from Chandani Chowk in Delhi. They were supposed to hand over the cash to the manager after reaching Ahmedabad,” said a police officer.
ATS officials informed IT department about the seizure. The cash was handed over to the IT department.
“The suspects are being interrogated. We believe that a large hawala network is involved in the transaction. Further investigation is going on,” said a police officer.
