Jaipur: The city police on Saturday arrested a woman for murdering her 2-month-old granddaughter in Muralipura area. The woman first tried to strangle the girl to death and then threw her into a water tank. The girl drowned. Police officials said that the woman wanted a grandson, but when the girl was born she decided to kill her.

The incident happened on Thursday. No one came forward with the complaint against the woman, identified as Vimala Devi till Friday. The police launched an investigation on their own and asked the girl’s mother Guddi Devi to register a complaint against her mother-in-law when her role was found to be suspicious in the girl’s death.

Vimla Devi is a resident of Shiv Nagar in Muralipura. Her son Anil Sabu runs a grocery shop in Shiv Nagar.

“Since Guddi Devi gave birth to Drishthi, Vimala Devi was annoyed with her daughter-in-law. She used to fight with her. She wanted a son. Vimala Devi sent Guddi to the rooftop on the pretext of some work. She tried to murder the girl by strangling her. But she realized that she could get caught, so she threw her into the water tank,” said a police officer.

She then started screaming and shouting that she couldn’t find the girl. Guddi rushed downstairs. Vimala asked Guddi Devi to take a look into the water tank.

“The girl was found in the tank. People rushed her to a hospital where she was declared brought dead. When we were informed, we got suspicious because the girl couldn’t have walked to the water tank. Vimala was interrogated and when we were sure that the girl was murdered, we asked Guddi to register an FIR against her mother-in-law,” said the officer.
