JAIPUR: The Jaipur Police have arrested one Mihir Diwakar, the alleged former business partner of Indian cricket legend Mahendra Singh Dhoni, for allegedly extorting Rs 12 lakh from a young man in Jaipur on the pretext of giving him the franchise of a cricket academy. The accused was produced in court and taken on remand for one day.

According to reports, Diwakar, who is also a former cricketer and was a teammate of Dhoni in the Indian Under-19 World Cup-winning team in 2000, had been accused of fraud by Dhoni himself. The police had been investigating the case for several days before finally arresting Diwakar in a raid from Noida.

The matter came to light when Jaidev Rose, a resident of Ganga Sagar Scheme, Sirsi Road, filed a complaint at Karni Vihar police station on March 4, 2023. In his complaint, Rose alleged that Diwakar and his associates had cheated him and embezzled Rs 12 lakh on the pretext of giving him the franchise for the cricket academy. However, neither did they open the academy nor did they return the money.

Diwakar’s association with Dhoni goes back to their playing days together in Bihar’s Ranji team. However, their partnership turned sour when Dhoni ended his contact with Diwakar and Soumya Das’s company Arka Sports Management Pvt. Ltd. on August 15, 2021. Since then, both parties have been involved in legal disputes with each other.

In fact, Dhoni had filed a case of fraud against Diwakar in Ranchi Civil Court on January 4, 2024. Following this move by Dhoni; Diwakar also filed a defamation case against him (Dhoni).
