ED raids foreign currency exchange and hawala centers in Jaipur

The agency officials have reportedly recovered some documents during the raid. The foreign currencies seized during the raid include US dollars, Thai baht, Malaysian Ringgit, Canadian dollars and Swiss Franc.

Jaipur: Enforcement Directorate (ED) has raided allegedly illegal foreign currency exchange centres and hawala businesses in Jaipur and seized foreign currency amounting to Rs 14.40 lakh and Rs 3.38 lakh cash, sources said. The Jaipur branch of ED carried out raids at Vinod Enterprises situated in Nehru Bazaar near Ajmeri Gate.

ED had raided a building on MI Road on September 27 and recovered some documents pointing to network of illegal foreign money exchange centres and hawala businesses in Jaipur. The ED had raided a hawala businessman’s premises and seized 17975 US dollars, 16320 Euro, 4850 Chinese Yuan, 1970 pounds, 1.10 lakh yen and 1000 Riyal.

The raid in Nehru Bazaar was conducted based on the evidence gathered from the MI Road building. The agency officials have reportedly recovered some documents during the raid. The foreign currencies seized during the raid include US dollars, Thai baht, Malaysian Ringgit, Canadian dollars and Swiss Franc.

Sources said that many foreign exchange centres are now under the radar of ED for their involvement in illegal exchange and hawala business.

The increasing number of gold and foreign currency smuggling cases has put the security agencies on alert. The agencies have seized gold and other illegal items worth crores of rupees at Jaipur airport in the recent past.
