JAIPUR: the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested the mastermind behind a call center scam that targeted foreigners. The accused, Rafiq Khan, was caught at Jaipur Airport while attempting to flee the country. The ED team had been tracking him down for a month.
The scam involved opening call centers and recruiting young men and women who spoke good English. They would then make phone calls to foreigners, posing as representatives of a loan company, and offer them low-interest loans.
Once the foreigners agreed to take the loan, the call center employees would demand a hefty amount of money as processing fee. The victims were then left with no choice but to pay up or risk losing their loan.
The ED received information about this scam from the Ministry of External Affairs, which had received complaints from foreign nationals who had fallen victim to it.
The police and ED teams raided different areas of Rajasthan and arrested several people involved in running fake call centers. However, Rafiq Khan remained at large until his arrest on Monday.
