Depressed over debts, businessman commits suicide in Vidhyadhar Nagar

Devendra Kumar left a suicide note in which he allegedly stated that he was under huge debts and the loan sharks were harassing him.

Jaipur: A local businessman identified as Devendra Maheshwari (45) committed suicide by consuming poison at his house in Vidhyadhar Nagar area of Jaipur on Wednesday. He left a suicide note in which he stated that he was under huge debts and the loan sharks were harassing him.

The incident happened late night on Wednesday. The police are examining the suicide note and said that an FIR will be registered against people named in the note if the allegations of harassment are found true.

The deceased has been identified as Devendra Maheshwari, a resident of Sahyog Apartment located in Sector-6 of Vidhyadhar Nagar.

According to the police, Devendra consumed poison at 10 pm on Wednesday following which his condition went serious. Family members rushed him to a hospital where he died while undergoing treatment.

Devendra’s brother Krishna Kumar told the police officials that he and his brother opened a dry fruit supply firm Salasar Traders a few years ago.

Their firm acquired dry fruits from local traders and supplied them to the Metro Cash & Carry India Private Limited company. The company didn’t make the payment for about Rs 3.5 crore worth of dry fruits. Devendra filed a lawsuit against the company’s officials in 2016, but the company’s officials obtained a stay on the arrest.

Family members alleged that JDA officials hand in glove with the company officials damaged their office’s building a few months ago. Some loan sharks started coming to their house and harassing.

Devendra had been suffering from depression due to the pressure from company’s officials, bank loans and harassment by loan sharks for a long time.

The Vidhyadhar Nagar branch of Bank of Maharashtra’s managers made his account NPA due to which he faced a huge loss in his business and was not able to pay his debts off.

Around three businessmen committed suicide since February 2018 depressed over debts and harassment by loan sharks in Jaipur.
