Communal tension simmers in Sikar’s Fatehpur; people clash with police

Jaipur: Communal tension flared up in Fatehpur town in Sikar district on Monday after a group of people alleged that some pilgrims taking out a religious procession while playing DJ were attacked by members of another community.

Demanding arrest of those who attacked the procession, many right-wing Hindu organization called for a bandh following markets in Fatehpur town were closed on Monday. Some people started showing slogan in the main market and then pelted stones. The police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the crowd. The cops also used tear gas.

Several people are reported to have been injured in the incident. The situation was tense till the reports last came in.

The clash between the members of two community occurred on Sunday evening. Some youths were taking out a procession on foot through Luharon Ka Mohalla on Churu Road in Fatehpur. They got into a verbal argument with the members of another community near a religious place. Three youths sustained minor injuries in the scuffle.

The news of the clash spread throughout the town. Hundreds of people gathered on the spot and demanded arrest of the attackers. The police had registered an FIR in this connection on Sunday; however, tension prevailed in the town on Monday.

Heavy police force has been deployed in the town to restore law and order.

Police officials said that some people involved in attacking the religious procession have been detained, while a search has been launched for others. Senior administration officials appealed for peace.
