Cashier steals Rs 2.51 crore from Bhilwara Urban Bank

Rajesh Sharma, who was head cashier, was suspended after the embezzlement came to the notice of bank authorities. An FIR has been registered against him.

Rajesh Sharma accused of theft at a bank in Bhilwara

Jaipur: A cashier, identified as Rajesh Sharma belonging to Jaipur, allegedly stole Rs 2.51 crore from Bhilwara Urban Bank’s main branch situated in Nagauri Garden. Rajesh Sharma, who was head cashier, was suspended after the embezzlement came to the notice of bank authorities. An FIR has been registered against him.

The theft came to light on Monday when the bank officials were verifying the amount of cash in the bank. A customer of the bank had withdrawn Rs 3 lakh from the bank. He returned a few minutes later and told the bank officials that he was not given the full amount. Rs 54,000 were missing from the amount he had withdrawn with a bank slip.

The customer had complained about the missing money to another cashier of the bank, Mahesh Pandey. Mahesh complained to bank MD Dharendra Varma who was on leave. Mahesh also confronted Rajesh about it. Rajesh made some excuse which caused suspicion.

The MD ordered a cash verification exercise on Monday. The cashiers started counting cash. Rajesh however disappeared during the lunch time. He didn’t return from lunch. The cash verification revealed a theft of Rs 2.51 crore.

Rajesh had been working as a head cashier at this bank for the past 12 years. He lives in a rented accommodation in Subhash Nagar of Bhilwara. The bank officials claimed Rajesh had been stealing money for a long time, but he managed to stay undetected.
