Jaipur: Bypolls to elect new mayor of Jaipur will be held on January 22. The election for the chairpersons of two other municipalities – Nohar and Sumerpur – will also be conducted on the same day. The posts fell vacant when the Jaipur and chairpersons of Nohar and Sumerpur were elected as legislators in the recently held assembly elections.

Ashok Lahoty was Jaipur mayor. He won the assembly election from Sanganer constituency and had to resign from the post. The new mayor will most likely be from BJP based on the number of corporators from the party.

Manoj Bhardwaj had been recently appointed new mayor of Jaipur, but the Congress government announced that the elections would be held to elect the new mayor. Sources said that the Congress is looking to take advantage of the rift among three groups of BJP corporators in the JMC.

It is for the first time that a JMC board will have third mayor during its tenure. The current board formed in 2015 was headed by Nirmal Nahata who resigned following the deaths of cows in Hingonia cow shelter. Then Lohoty became the mayor. Now the board will elect the third mayor.
