NEET counselling 2019: Fresh mop-up round also courts controversies

Jaipur: The fresh mop-up round – being undertaken for the admission in medical colleges of Rajasthan – also has hit controversies. Some students and their family members staged protest and shouted slogans at SMS Medical College in Jaipur accusing authorities of favoring some candidates. The police had to intervene and placate the protesting students.

The mop-up round had earlier been stayed by the Rajasthan high court on complaints of irregularities in the admission process. The fresh round was being held on the direction of the court. However, it has also courted controversies.

On Sunday, more than 5000 students appeared for counselling. Some students alleged that they got admission on NRI seats earlier, but they are now being replaced by some other students at the behest of authorities. These students are being unduly favoured, they alleged. They also alleged that the MCI norms are being flouted.

The students are supposed to report at their allotted medical colleges for MBBS and BDS courses by 6 pm on August 27. The list of vacant seats would be released on August 28. The colleges will complete the admission process by August 31.

The Rajasthan high court had earlier stayed the mop-up round. On Thursday, a single bench of the court vacated the stay and gave the state government its nod to follow the decision taken by the board of governors of the medical council of India (MCI) in this regard. The court directed the state government to complete the admission process by August 31.

 The number of students – participating in the mop-round – increased by almost 60%. A total of 12,717 students participated in the fresh mop-up round. Only 8092 students were to participate in the previously cancelled mop-up round. The increase is due to the inclusion of upgradation and upward movement of seats.
