2040 Kashmiri students in Rajasthan; many leave state following attack on CRPF convoy

Jaipur: The first choice of students from Jammu and Kashmir for pursuing engineering and medical courses is Rajasthan. Over 2040 Kashmiri students are studying in various colleges of the state under the Prime Minister Special Scholarship Scheme (PMSSS). However there are reports that many of them have left the state following the terror attack on CRPF convoy in Jammu and Kashmir.
After the sedition charges were pressed against the four girls of NIMS University for allegedly celebrating Pulwama terror attack on Monday, many Kashmiri students in the state are scared and went on leaves.
The local students have allegedly started targeting all the Kashmiri students in different colleges of the state due to which, more than 600 Kashmiri students left the state temporarily due to security concerns.
Prime Minister Special Scholarship Scheme (PMSSS) provides financial assistance to Jammu and Kashmir students for pursuing engineering, medical and dental courses. A total of 5000 seats are assigned for the scholarship in the country. Of these seats, 2040 Kashmiri students are studying in 32 colleges of Rajasthan alone.
The number of Kashmiri students coming to Rajasthan for studies is increasing every year.
As per the PMSSS scheme, meritorious students from Kashmir are given free education and Rs 1 lakh maintenance amount per year for their studies in college by the central government.
More than 25000 students apply for the PMSSS scheme in Rajasthan. Of them, the Rajasthan government shortlists 12,000 students. Some of these students get the chance to study free of course under the scheme based on a selection process.
In the aftermath of Pulwama terror attack on February 14, several cases of anti-national sloganeering by Kashmiri students of engineering and dental colleges in the state have come to light. Four girls of NIMS university were even booked for sedition charges.
