Jaipur: With an increase in the population of tigers in Ranthambore, the forest department is planning to relocate at least five majestic cats from Ranthambore to Sariska, Mukundra and Ramgarh reserves.

The population of tigers in Ranthambore has grown to nearly 80. The Sariska tiger reserve has 26 tigers as per the last census.

Due to the increase in the population, the incidents of tigers straying into the residential areas around the Ranthambore buffer zone are increasing. The officials of other tiger reserves have approached the wildlife department requesting the relocation of Ranthambore tigers to Sariska, Mukundra and Ramgarh.

The forest and wildlife officials have already started the process of tiger relocation. After getting the nod from NTCA (National Tiger Conservation Authority), the tigers may be relocated before the end of the monsoon season.

The tigers being considered for relocation include T-119, T-135, T-103, T-136, 137 , T-129, and T- 121.

The authorities are also concerned about inbreeding. As the territorial area for tigers is shrinking, the danger of closely-related tigers breeding has increased. For this reason, preparations are being made to bring tigers from Maharashtra as well. For which the Chief Wildlife Warden has recently written to the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). The forest officials of Maharashtra have already given their consent in this regard.
