Jaipur: Jaipurites celebrated the World Heritage Site status\nbestowed upon the Walled City by UNESCO on Saturday. While it has come as great\nnews for people who are nostalgic about Jaipur, the question is: Will Jaipur be\nable to maintain this prestigious recognition?<\/p>\n\n\n\n UNESCO reviews the list of places inscribed on its list of\nWorld Heritage Sites every three years. If\nthe civic authorities don\u2019t wake up to the challenge of maintaining this\nstatus, the city may lose it again, say experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Several problems such as traffic congestion, encroachments\nand illegal constructions plague the Walled City. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThere is no denying the fact that maintaining the\nsanitation, removing encroachments and putting a stop on illegal constructions\nwill be a big challenge, but we will now double up our efforts to keep the\nWalled City a world class tourist destination. We will try to spread awareness\namong shopkeepers and local residents about what this tag actually means and\nhow it will benefit them to maintain it. Action would be taken against those\nwho flout the norms,\u201d said a senior JMC officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He added that the Rajasthan government plans to go ahead\nwith its proposal of ban on new construction. The works undergoing under the\nSmart City Project to rejuvenate the Walled City will be stepped up and more\nfunds will be invested in rehabilitation and restoration of the glory of the\nWalled City, he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The city was founded by then king of Jaipur Jai Singh.
