Jaipur: The Rajasthan government has constituted a four member committee to dispose of the cases registered against protestors during the SC/ST Bharat Bandh for violence and rioting. The bandh was organized by SC/ST community against a Supreme Court order that directed the police to investigate cases lodged under the SC/ST Act before arresting the accused persons.

The committee will be headed by social justice minister Arun Chaturvedi. Three other members are civil supply minister Babulal Varma, chairman of Rajasthan Heritage Protection and Development Authority Oankar Singh Lakhawat and ACS, home department Deepak Upreti. The committee will submit its report to the home department.

The BJP-led Rajasthan government had promised to withdraw all the cases. Sources said that the four-member committee will submit its report to the government within the next three months.

The government has taken this step apparently to placate the SC/ST community that was up in arms against the SC order and also the police for registering FIRs against protestors during the bandh on April 2.

The government wants to dispose of these cases before the assembly election due later this year.

The police registered nearly 275 cases in connection with the violence and rioting during the bandh across the state. The government has decided not to make an arrest in any of these cases before the committee submits its reports.
