Woman sterilized without consent in Jaipur hospital as staff gets busy with birthday celebration

JAIPUR: A case of sterilization without consent has come to light at Jaipur’s Zanana Hospital. The victim, Poonam Kanwar, was admitted for her second delivery on July 21, where Dr. Pawan Kumar Agarwal was in charge of the ward.
According to the complaint filed by the victim’s husband, Ramsingh, the doctors and staff in the ward were busy celebrating someone’s birthday while Poonam underwent the operation. In this chaotic environment, she was allegedly sterilized without her consent or knowledge.
Ramsingh further alleges that the hospital staff did not seek consent from the family regarding the sterilization procedure and provided no information about it. Poonam was unconscious when the sterilization occurred.
Adding to the ordeal, the doctors allegedly misled Poonam and her family into signing a document, under the pretext of receiving a government grant for having a daughter.
Ramsingh was later informed by the hospital that his wife had been sterilized.
The hospital’s authorities deny the allegations, claiming that the sterilization was done with the woman’s consent and her signature. The police have launched an investigation.
