Vishnu Lata elected new mayor of Jaipur; BJP’s Manoj Bhardwaj defeated by 1 vote

Vishnu Lata after winning the Jaipur mayor elections. The result was announced on Tuesday.

Jaipur: In a surprising turn of events, BJP rebel Vishnu Lata was elected the new mayor of Jaipur. He had not been fielded by the BJP, so he turned a rebel and decided to fight as an independent candidate. According to preliminary reports, he got 45 votes, the BJP candidate Manoj Bhardwaj got 44 votes. One vote was rejected.

The Jaipur mayor election results shocked the BJP leaders who have been trying to bring consensus among the councillors for the past two days after confining them to a resort.

Sources said that most councillors were not happy with the nomination of Manoj Bhardwaj. The BJP decided to go with Bhardwaj despite the dissidence and as a result, he was defeated in the elections.

The Jaipur mayor results have further embarrassed the party ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. There are 63 councillors from the BJP and 18 are from the Congress in the current board of the JMC. Nine are independents. despite being in majority, the BJP suffered a defeat due to the rift in the groups of the party councillors.

A meeting was held at a resort where all the BJP councillors had gathered on Monday. The meeting was presided over by election in-charge Satish Poonia, BJP Jaipur district incharge Rajendra Gehlot and district president Sanjay Jail. The councillors agreed that they would leave the selection of the candidate to the party however, a consensus could not be reached.
