Jaipur: Senior Congress leader and former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot hailed the Supreme Court verdict that struck down the practice of triple talaq in Muslim community. In a series of tweets, he said that it was a landmark judgement and it will bring about a positive change.

“Supreme Court has given a landmark judgement on Triple Talaq. It is a victory for Muslim women, their struggle for getting equal rights and for gender justice. This progressive judgment will go a long way in empowering Muslim women,” Gehlot said in one of the tweets.

He further said that he appreciated the struggle of five resolute women including Afreen Rehman of Jaipur, who fought the battle against practice of triple talaq and won.

“Their efforts will bring a positive change in the lives of thousands of Muslim women,” he said.

28-year-old Afreen Rahman of Jaipur had approached the apex court demanding justice when her husband divorced her via a speed post letter.

She got married after finding a match on a matrimonial site, only to be divorced via the speed post letter. Afreed got married to an Indore-based man in 2014 and moved to Indore to live with her husband as a housewife. But she alleged that her in-laws started harassing her for dowry. After bearing the pain for almost a year, she was sent to her parents. In January, 2016, she received a letter from her husband. It had the word, ‘talaq’ written three times.
