JAIPUR:  Suspended Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Special Operations Group (SOG), Divya Mittal, has been granted bail by the Rajasthan High Court in Jaipur.

Mittal was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on January 16 on charges of demanding a bribe of Rs 2 crore in connection with a narcotics smuggling case. A charge sheet has been already presented in the case.

Advocate Pankaj Gupta appeared on behalf of the petitioner and the bail plea was accepted by the single bench of Justice CK Songara. Mittal, who was posted in the Ajmer branch of SOG, had allegedly demanded the bribe for not registering a case against a suspected drug smuggler.

According to officials, Mittal demanded the bribe not only for herself but also in the name of senior SOG officials. The ACB received a complaint following which a preliminary investigation was launched under the supervision of ACB add SP Bajrang Singh Shekhawat. During the investigation, it was found that Mittal was demanding Rs 2 crore through a middleman, Sumit Kumar, who is an expelled constable. The ACB complainant negotiated the amount and agreed to Rs 50 lakh in two installments, but Mittal allegedly got a tip-off about the ACB complaint and her middleman refused to receive the bribe amount.

Following this, the ACB obtained a warrant from a court and raided several places belonging to Mittal. She was then arrested under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, while the middleman Sumit remains at large. The case is still under investigation.
