Jaipur: The Rajasthan capital is lagging behind Udiapur, Kota and Ajmer in terms of implementing Smart City Projects. Jaipur has secured 19th rank. Udaipur is ranked at Number 7, Kota 13 and Ajmer 16. The ranking has been given based on the progress of various works under the Smart City Project.

A budget of Rs 7,025 crore has been sanctioned to four cities selected under the Smart City Project, an Indian government initiative. A total of 270 works are to be undertaken under the project. Only 29 projects under the scheme worth Rs 154.29 crore have been completed, while 34 other works are under progress. Even a detailed project report (DPR) has not been prepared for nearly 113 projects under the scheme.

The ranking will leave the civic authorities embarrassed as most of these projects are being undertaken by Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) and Jaipur Development Authority (JDA).

The civic bodies have been lethargic in implementing many of the projects. For example, JMC had launched public bicycle sharing scheme under the Smart City Project. JMC was to set up 20 docking stations in the city. Only two docking stations could be set up – one at Ramniwas Garden near JLN Road and antoher at Jawahar Circle. They too have been closed.

Under the Smart City Projects, the civic authorities are to ensure basic infrastructure. Projects related to promoting mixed land use in area-based developments, housing and inclusiveness, creating walkable localities, preserving and developing open spaces, promoting a variety of transport options, making governance citizen-friendly and cost-effective and giving an identity to the city are to be launched.
