Jaipur: Shyam Sundar Sharma was appointed chairman of Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC). He will hold the post for nearly two and a half months before he retires in September.

Sharma who hails from Jhalawar took charge of office on Tuesday after Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh cleared his name for the post. RPSC staff including secretary Giriraj Singh Khushwaha and deputy secretary Bhagwat Singh Rathore congratulated him.

He has replaced IAS officer Lalit K Panwar who held the post for nearly two years.

Sharma had been appointed a member of the RPSC in January last year. He would turn 62 in September.

Sharma was a lawyer by profession. He also fought for the assembly election from Manohar assembly area, but he was defeated. He has held various posts in BJP.

After being appointed, Sharma told media persons that his priority would be to bring transparency in examinations and to conduct them on time.

“We would try to speed up recruitments to fill up vacancies,” said Sharma.

RPSC had been at the receiving end of courts in the past few years as some results had to be declared several times. There had been reports of paper leaks also. Some of these cases were investigated by the special operations group (SOG).
