Jaipur: Rajasthan households stepping into the new year are facing a fresh rise in the price of Sarass ghee, even as earlier tax cuts had promised relief to consumers. The Rajasthan Cooperative Dairy Federation (RCDF) has revised ghee prices upward, increasing the cost by Rs. 20 per kilogram across select bulk packs with immediate effect.

The price revision applies primarily to 15-kilogram tin packs, commonly purchased by households, sweet makers, caterers and food businesses. From Thursday onwards, consumers buying the standard Sarass ghee tin will pay Rs. 9,345, up from Rs. 9,045. The cow ghee variant has also moved up, now retailing at Rs. 9,630 per tin compared to the earlier Rs. 9,330.

Price Hike Follows GST Relief Granted Last Year

The increase comes just months after the central government reduced GST on dairy products, including ghee, in September last year. At the time, GST on ghee was cut from 12 percent to 5 percent, resulting in an estimated price reduction of around Rs. 37 per litre. The move was widely seen as consumer-friendly, aimed at controlling inflation in essential food items.

However, the latest RCDF decision has partially offset that relief for buyers of bulk packs, raising questions among consumers about the net benefit of the tax cut.

Bulk Buyers Most Affected, Small Packs Spared

Notably, the price increase does not affect one-litre packs. RCDF officials confirmed that retail consumers purchasing smaller quantities will continue to pay the same rates. One-litre Sarass ghee remains priced at Rs. 551, while cow ghee continues to sell at Rs. 570 per litre.

This selective pricing means households that rely on bulk purchases—particularly during weddings, festivals and community events—will bear the brunt of the hike, while everyday retail buyers are shielded for now.

Not the First Increase in Recent Months

This is the second time in recent months that RCDF has revised ghee prices. In August last year, prices were increased across multiple pack sizes, including one-litre, five-litre and 15-kilogram tins, also by Rs. 20 per litre or kilogram. The latest hike marks another upward adjustment within a four-month window.
