Jaipur: The annual Sambhar Festival has returned with a packed five-day programme between Dec 27 – Dec 31 that blends Rajasthan’s folk culture, adventure tourism and the unique ecology of the Sambhar region. Hosted in and around Sambhar town near the salt lake, the festival positions itself as more than a cultural fair — it is designed as a complete travel experience for visitors planning a winter getaway.
The festival was formally inaugurated at Jhapok with the participation of Rajasthan’s Deputy Chief Minister Diya Kumari, along with local administration and tourism officials. The event is being organised with the support of the Jaipur district administration and the Sambhar municipal body.
The Sambhar Festival focuses on showcasing the region’s natural beauty, traditional arts and emerging adventure tourism potential. The idea is to offer visitors a mix of daytime outdoor activities and evening cultural programmes, all set against the backdrop of India’s largest inland salt lake.
According to organisers, the festival also aims to strengthen Sambhar’s identity as a global tourist destination, especially during the winter months when migratory birds arrive from Europe and northern Asia.
What Visitors Can Expect on the Ground
Throughout the five days, visitors will find art and craft stalls, handicraft displays, a dedicated food court and photography exhibitions highlighting Sambhar’s landscape and salt heritage. Special kite displays and interactive kite-flying activities have been planned, drawing on the region’s long association with open skies and desert winds.
Tourists can experience horse rides, camel rides and camel cart rides within designated festival zones. Adventure-focused activities include jeep and car rallies, ATV rides, cycling trails and guided safaris that introduce visitors to the salt lake terrain.
The programme also includes salt processing tours that explain how Sambhar’s famous salt is produced, along with bird-watching walks led by local guides. Night-time attractions include stargazing sessions, which take advantage of the low light pollution around the lake.
Evenings are reserved for cultural and spiritual events. The Devyani Teerth Sarovar will host a deepotsav and maha aarti, while a Durga tableau procession adds a ceremonial element to the festival calendar.
Music lovers can look forward to live performances, with folk and contemporary acts scheduled across different days. Sunday features a performance by Moti Khan, followed by Rapariya Balam on Monday. On December 30, Mahaveer Nath will present a Rajasthani folk evening, while December 31 will see a heritage walk through Sambhar town along with a display of fancy kite-flying techniques and street performances by folk artists.
Adventure Activities in the Spotlight
One of the festival’s strongest draws this year is its adventure lineup. Para sailing, para motoring, para gliding, balloon rides, jeep safaris and cycling routes have been planned to cater to both thrill-seekers and casual tourists. Organisers say safety protocols and trained operators have been put in place for all adventure activities.
Why Sambhar Matters
Speaking at the inauguration, Diya Kumari described Sambhar’s natural landscape as its defining strength. She noted that the arrival of migratory birds, especially the greater flamingo, has given the region global recognition. She also appealed to residents of Jaipur and tourists from across the state to experience the festival firsthand.
The Sambhar Lake region is also recognised internationally as a wetland of ecological importance, making the festival an opportunity for visitors to understand conservation alongside tourism.
The opening ceremony was attended by senior administrative officials including Jaipur district officers, Sambhar subdivision officials and representatives from the tourism department. Postal cards themed on Sambhar were also launched during the inauguration, adding a commemorative touch to the event.
