Jaipur: The office of the Rajasthan University’s vice chancellor can not be held by someone undeserving for the post, the Rajasthan high court commented after hearing a petition against the appointment of JP Singhal as V-C.

The court said that the university needed people who could carry forward its legacy and contribute to its prominence. The court sought explanation as to how an undeserving person was appointed for this post.

The court was also miffed over the use of the academic title of doctor by Singhal. The double bench of Justice KS Jhaveri and Justice VS Mathur asked how Singhal could use the title when he wasn’t a PhD degree holder. The university administration argued in the court that it was due to a typing error; however, the court said that it wasn’t a typo, instead the university was trying to mislead the court.

The university administration sought time from the court to resolve the issue. They said that if the university was given time, the court’s intervention in the matter would not be required.
Singhal told media persons that he would not resign from the post. “I will abide by the court’s order. The lawyers have sought time till Jan 9,” said Singhal.
