At present, candidates pay a single fee that allows them to apply for multiple RPSC exams, a policy that officials say has encouraged casual applications and widespread absenteeism on exam day.

Jaipur: Alarmed by low turnout in its recruitment exams and the mounting cost of empty examination halls, the Rajasthan Public Service Commission has asked the state government to bring back application fees for every examination, scrapping the current one-time fee system.

At present, candidates pay a single fee that allows them to apply for multiple RPSC exams, a policy that officials say has encouraged casual applications and widespread absenteeism on exam day.

Utkal Rajan Sahu, chairman of the Rajasthan Public Service Commission, said on Wednesday that the commission was burning through crores of rupees conducting exams for candidates who never turn up.

RPSC officials say thousands of candidates routinely skip exams despite completing the application process, forcing the commission to spend heavily on logistics, security, centres and staff for vacant seats.

The proposal, now with the state government, aims to discourage non-serious applicants and improve attendance, while also reducing the financial drain on the exchequer caused by repeated no-shows.
