JAIPUR: Rajasthan Roadways has implemented the discount announced earlier by the Congress government on bus fares for women and girls. Starting from 12 midnight tonight, a 50% discount on fares will be applicable to all categories of buses, including Volvo buses, within the state limits of Rajasthan.

This decision had been approved by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot.

The Roadways Administration has issued official orders, expanding the existing exemption, which previously only applied to ordinary buses. However, it is important to note that the discounted fares will no longer be applicable for travel outside the state boundaries.

CM Gehlot had announced the rebate during the budget session earlier this year, pledging to raise the discount for women and girls traveling in ordinary roadways buses from 30% to 50%.

The implementation of the 30% fare discount for women in roadways buses had begun on April 1. Subsequently, CM Gehlot, during the inauguration ceremony of the Sindhi Camp Bus Terminal in Jaipur on May 25, had announced the extension of the concession to cover all roadways buses, providing women and girls with a 50% fare reduction. The recent approval ensures the fulfillment of this commitment made by the Chief Minister.

In a gesture to celebrate the festival of Rakhi, women and girls will continue to enjoy the privilege of free travel in Rajasthan Roadways buses. This special provision, which had been introduced during the previous government’s tenure, remains unchanged.

The Gehlot government’s emphasis on women voters is evident through a series of schemes specifically designed for their benefit. Apart from the discounted bus fares, CM Gehlot had earlier promised free smartphones for women on Rakhi. However, the latest announcement modifies this initiative by transferring an amount equal to the smartphone’s value directly to the women’s bank accounts.

Another welfare measure catering to women’s needs is the provision of ration kits for every family. Under this scheme, approximately Rs 360 worth of ration will be directly transferred to eligible households’ bank accounts on a monthly basis.
