Rajasthan: Kumari Selja appointed chairperson of Congress election screening committee

Selja who hails from Haryana is considered to be a prominent Dalit community leader in Congress. There were speculations where appointing him for the key role in the upcoming assembly elections is part of the Congress’s strategy to appease Dalits.

Jaipur: Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Kumari Selja has been appointed chairperson of the Rajasthan Congress party’s election screening committee.

Kumari Selja was an MP when the UPA government was in power. She has been a cabinet minister also. She is considered close to AICC general secretary (organization) and former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot.

Selja who hails from Haryana is considered to be a prominent Dalit community leader in Congress. There were speculations whether appointing her for the key role in the upcoming assembly elections is part of the Congress’s strategy to appease Dalits.

The committee will begin deliberations on which candidates should be allotted tickets for the upcoming elections in Rajasthan. Lalitesh Tripathi and Shakir Sanadi have been appointed members of the election screening committee.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi approved the appointments of screening committees in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Mizoram ahead of the upcoming polls. Sources said that Ashok Gehlot who released the appointment orders played a major role in giving the responsibility to Selja in Rajasthan.

Madhusudhan Mistry, Bhubaneshwar Kalita, V.D. Satheesan and Luizinho Falerioa were appointed as chairpersons of screening committees of Madhya Pradesh, Chhatisgarh, Odisha, and Mizoram respectively.
