Jaipur: Rajasthan’s PCPNDT cell on Sunday busted an interstate gang involved in sex determination of fetus and arrested three gang members from Jhunjhunju’s Khetari area. The kingpin Ravi Singh was allegedly running this racket in 15 districts of five states – Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The accused were arrested under various sections of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act and seized an unregistered portable sonography machine from them. They were conducting sex determination tests for Rs 30,000. Ravi Singh managed to flee the spot, while his three accomplices were nabbed.
National Health Mission (NHM) director Naveen Jain said that they were getting complaints of sex determination of fetus from Jhunjhunju district for the past 5-6 months.
“The name of one Ravi Singh was coming up frequently in these complaints. We sent pregnant women working as decoys to him several times in the past, but he was too careful. Finally, he was trapped on Monday,” said an officer.
The officer said that Ravi Singh told the decoy to come with two pregnant women to Jhunjhunu’s Chidawa town at 6 pm on Sunday. The gang had already made the decoy deposit Rs 10,000 as an advance amount for sex determination. Ravi told the decoy to bring Rs 50,000 more. Ravi was charging Rs 60,000 for two women – the decoy and another woman who was assisting the PCPNDT cell with the operation.
The two women paid the money to Ravi as per instructed. Ravi asked the women to come to Jhanjhot village and meanwhile he made sure that they were not being followed. He made the women to come to one place after another. Finally, a middleman, identified as Rajendra brought them to a place in Sanjay Nagar for sex determination. However as power supply was snapped, the women were taken to the rented accommodation of Ravi Singhin Babai village for the test.
After getting a signal from the two women, the PCPNDT cell officials raided the house and arrested middlemen Sumer Saini, Rajendra and Sandeep Singhana from the spot. The kingpin Ravi Singh however managed to give the team a slip. He drove away in a car.
