JAIPUR: The Rajasthan High Court has dismissed the petition filed by the Anjuman Committee seeking a ban on the film Ajmer-92, which revolves around the Ajmer sex scandal.
Justice Indrajit Singh, presiding over a single bench, rejected the petition and advised the petitioner to present their viewpoint in the representation filed with the Censor Board.
In their petition, the Anjuman Committee had requested a ban on the film, along with the formation of a committee chaired by a retired High Court judge to preview the film for Anjuman Committee members before its release.
The committee argued that the film portrays the Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti and the Chishti community incorrectly. Although individuals from various communities were implicated in the 1992 sex scandal, the film solely focuses on the Chishti community. Therefore, the petitioner requested a pre-release screening. The film is scheduled for release on July 14.
The union government argued that the petition is not maintainable. Additional Solicitor General RD Rastogi, representing the government, opposed the petition and argued that the accused in the case have already been convicted and sentenced.
Both the High Court and the Supreme Court have affirmed the convictions. Films are based on factual events, and the Censor Board has the authority to review such cases under Section-6 of the Cinematograph Act.
The petitioner has already submitted their representation to the Censor Board, which requires time for deliberation. Hence, the petition is deemed not maintainable. After hearing arguments from both sides, the High Court rejected the plea and directed the petitioner to present their concerns through the pending representation before the Censor Board.
The film Ajmer-92, directed by Pushpendra Singh, claims to be inspired by real events. It centers around the 1992 Ajmer gang rape case, in which numerous school and college girls were subjected to sexual assault and blackmail. The police had filed a charge sheet against 12 individuals in this case.
