Jaipur: The Ashok Gehlot cabinet on Monday decided to discontinue pension benefits to MISA detainees introduced during the previous BJP-led government. The cabinet has repealed the Rajasthan Democracy Fighter Samman Nidhi Rules, 2008.

The government said that it was a financial burden. By repealing the act, the government has reduced the financial burden on the treasury by about Rs 40 crore annually, according to cabinet minister Shanti Dhariwal.

During the Emergency imposed by the then prime minister Indira Gandhi-led Congress government between 1975 and 1977, thousands were detained across the country under MISA.

The pension scheme for MISA detainees was started by the then Vasundhara Raje-led BJP government in 2008.

The Congress government has now discontinued the pension benefits by repealing the Act.
