JAIPUR: Planning to purchase an electric vehicle in Rajasthan? Now is probably the right time because the state transport department has finalized the Electric Vehicle Policy. The policy offers incentives for the purchase of private vehicles as well as public transport vehicles such as buses.

A discount of Rs 30,000 to Rs 50,000 has been offered to buyers of electric cars depending on the vehicle’s engine capacity. The buyers will be exempted from SGST. The state government is also building dumping yards exclusively for the disposal of batteries.

The buyers of the electric bus can now claim incentives up to Rs 5 lakh. They also won’t need to pay SGST.

The policy aims at offering incentives so that the share of registration of electric vehicles can be brought up to 15% of the total registrations. The target is even higher for three-wheelers such as auto-rickshaws and four-wheelers such as cars. It’s 30% and 50% respectively.

“Our target is the registration of at least 35 lakh electric vehicles over the next five years,” said a senior transport department officer.

At present, electric vehicles are tax-free and the buyers don’t need to pay SGST which is 2.50%. An incentive of Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 is offered on the purchase of electric three-wheelers.

In addition to these benefits, the transport department will offer an incentive of Rs 5,000 to the buyers of electric bikes Rs 4,000-Rs 10,000 to buyers of three-wheelers and Rs 30,000 – Rs 50,000 to buyers of cars. This incentive amount will range from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh for the buyers of electric buses. The incentive will be calculated on the basis of kilowatt.

If you are already driving a petrol vehicle, you will get an additional incentive amount of Rs 20,000.

While the incentives offered by the Rajasthan transport department will definitely encourage people to buy electric vehicles, many vehicle owners complained that the incentive amount was less than that offered by some other states.

“For example, you can get an incentive of 15% or Rs 6 lakh on the purchase of an electric car costing between Rs 15 to 40 lakh in Haryana. Hybrid electric cars costing between Rs 15 to 40 lakh will get a 15% discount or Rs 3 lakh. An electric car of Rs 40 to 70 lakh will get you a discount of 15% or Rs 10 lakh. There is 100% exemption in motor vehicle tax on the purchase of electric two-wheeler and three-wheeler,” Narendra Somani, an electric car owner said.
