Jaipur: Former MLA and chief whip in the state assembly Raghu Sharma will likely be nominated as Congress candidate in the bypoll for Ajmer parliamentary constituency, sources said.

His name is likely to be finalized in a meeting to be presided over by the state in-charge Avinash Khanna in Delhi. Raghu Sharma would contest the election against Ramswaroop Lamba, son of late MP Sanwar Mal Jat.

Though Lamba’s nomination is yet to be announced, sources said that BJP is all set to field him to ride a massive wave of public sympathy in the wake of the death of his father, a prominent Jat community leader in the region.

The meeting in Delhi will be attended by ex-chief minister Ashok Gehlot, Congress president Sachin Pilot, AICC general secretary CP Joshi and leader of opposition in Rajasthan assembly Rameshwar Dudi.

Raghu Sharma had been an MLA from Kekari assembly constituency from 2008-2013. He has fought election from Jaipur parliamentary constituency also.

“His name has been finalized after an initial consultation with Congress president Rahul Gandhi. The official announcement will be made in the next couple of days,” said a source.

There are reports that Sanjay Dhakar may be nominated as Congress candidate for Mandalgarh by-election. He had lost the seat to Kirti Kumari by a small margin in 2013 assembly elections. The seat fell vacant when Kirti Kumari died of swine flu last year.

Congress has already fielded Karan Singh Yadav to fight by election from Alwar parliamentary constituency.
