Jaipur: Rajasthan anti-terrorist squad (ATS) on Monday arrested a woman from the Jaipur International Airport after she was allegedly caught smuggling gold from Dubai. The woman was quizzed by the ATS team and later handed over to the customs department for further investigation. The woman whose identity is yet to be revealed was arrested after the ATS got tip-off about gold smuggling.
According to the preliminary reports, the woman had landed at the Jaipur International Airport in the morning. She had come from Dubai. The ATS officials said that the customs department was interrogating the suspected gold smuggler.
Many cases of gold smuggling attempts have been reported at the Jaipur airport in the recent past. The customs department has arrested several gold smugglers while they were attempting to smuggle the gold from Dubai and Thailand. On April 28, the customs department arrested a man with 1.46 kg gold. The man was hiding the gold under his medical belt worn around the chest.
The lax laws are one of the reasons for fearlessness among smugglers, sources said. According to the Customs Act 104, if any person is found smuggling gold under worth Rs one crore can get bail on the spot. The case goes to the court only if the gold is worth over Rs 1 crore. In most gold smuggling cases reported recently at Jaipur airport, the gold’s value was between Rs 30 – 40 lakhs. So, the accused person got bail from the airport after submitting a security bond.
