Jaipur: The Rajasthan Anti-Terrorist Squad has arrested a young man from a village in Jaipur Rural for allegedly being in touch with an absconding gangster linked to the Lawrence gang and recovered seven live cartridges from his home, officials said on Friday.

The accused has been identified as Anil Kumar Jat alias Monty, a resident of Bansa Kushalpura village under Samod police station limits in Jaipur Rural. Initial inquiries indicate that he was in regular contact with Sunil Kumar Meena alias SK, a gangster originally from Kartarpur Rural in Punjab’s Jalandhar district who is currently absconding outside India and is described by investigators as an aide of the Lawrence gang. Sunil Meena is also said to have links with foreign-based gangsters, including operatives in Pakistan.

The operation was carried out under the direction of Additional Director General of Police Dinesh M.N. and the supervision of Inspector General of Police Rajesh Singh, by a team led by Superintendent of Police Gyanchand Yadav. The team had received specific information that the accused was active in arms smuggling and gang-related activity. The ATS coordinated with other agencies, picked Monty up for questioning, and during interrogation he allegedly admitted to keeping ammunition at his house.

A police team from Samod police station, led by station house officer Gopichand and sub-inspector Babulal, then raided the accused’s house in coordination with the ATS. During the search, seven live cartridges hidden inside the staircase of the house were recovered and seized. A case has been registered against the accused under the relevant provisions of the Arms Act and an investigation is under way.

Investigators are now probing the source of the ammunition, the accused’s wider network, and the nature of his alleged links with the Lawrence gang and overseas operatives.

The ATS has appealed to the public to share any information regarding the illegal transport, sale, purchase or possession of arms on its helpline number 0141-2610949 or the WhatsApp number 90000-1999070, adding that the identity of informants will be kept confidential and a suitable reward will be given.
