Jaipur: State goods and services tax (SGST) Bill was passed in the Rajasthan state assembly on Wednesday. Rajasthan has become the third state in the country to carry out the mandatory exercise for nationwide rollout of GST from July 1.

With the bill cleared in the state assembly, the Rajasthan government will now be able to levy tax on all inter-state supplies of goods or services except for liquor and petroleum products.

The draft of the GST bill had been approved by the central government on March 31. The Central government instructed all the states to pass the GST bill in their respective legislators.

After making some rectifications on the instructions of the central government, the Rajasthan government had the bill passed in the assembly on Wednesday.

All tax laws related to VAT, entertainment tax, entry tax of goods, luxury tax, etc., will now be subsumed. The bill needs to be ratified by at least 15 state legislatures before the President could notify the GST Council which was set up to decide the new tax rate and other issues.

The bill was cleared immediately after 14 Opposition MLAs were suspended for indulging in unruly behavior and using unparliamentary language.
