Jaipur: Rajasthan’s legislative calendar for the new year is set to take shape as the Assembly’s budget session begins on January 28, following formal approval from the Governor. The Assembly Secretariat has issued the official notification, and legislators have been informed about the schedule.

The session will open with the Governor’s address, where the state government is expected to highlight its key achievements. After paying tributes to departed leaders, proceedings on the first day will conclude, followed by a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee, which will finalise the detailed agenda for the weeks ahead.

Debate on the Governor’s address is expected to continue for three to four days, after which the government will present its response. A short break may follow before financial business resumes.

When the budget is expected

While the final date is yet to be confirmed, officials indicate that the state budget is likely to be presented in the second week of February. The government is expected to announce new programmes and policy initiatives during the budget.

One of the most closely watched proposals is a bill to remove the two-child norm for candidates contesting panchayat and urban local body elections. Separate amendment bills to the Panchayati Raj Act and the Municipal Act are ready and may be introduced during the session. Several other bills are also expected to be tabled.

The opposition has signalled an aggressive stance. Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully said the budget session would act as a report card of the government’s two-year performance. He criticised what he described as a pattern of ambitious budget announcements followed by later rollbacks, and raised concerns over rising debt and fiscal management.
