JAIPUR: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has recently announced the Indian women’s team that will compete against Bangladesh in the forthcoming ODI series. Priya Punia – a talented cricketer hailing from Rajasthan, has been selected for the team.
Priya originally hails from Janau Khari village in Rajgarh Tehsil of Churu district. Her mother, Saroj Poonia, passed away during the pandemic. Priya’s brother, Rahul Punia, shares her passion for cricket. Her father, Surendra Poonia, is a government employee.
The Bangladesh tour is scheduled to commence on July 9, with the first three T20 matches taking place on July 9, 11, and 13. The ODI matches are set to be held on July 16, 19, and 22, with all games hosted exclusively at the Mirpur venue.
Surendra Poonia expressed his joy and pride over his daughter’s selection for the Indian team. He stated that their entire family is filled with happiness and optimism following Priya’s inclusion in the Bangladesh series. They are hopeful that Priya will deliver an exceptional performance against Bangladesh.
Drawing parallels between Priya Punia and the renowned cricketer Virat Kohli, Surendra Poonia shared an anecdote with the media persons.
Two years ago, when Priya’s mother was battling COVID-19 in the hospital, she sent a heartfelt WhatsApp message to Priya, urging her not to abandon her England tour and to fulfill her dreams with the team.
Inspired by this, Surendra reminded Priya of Virat Kohli’s resolve to play in the Ranji Trophy following his father’s demise. He encouraged Priya to stay mentally strong during this challenging period and persevere through any obstacles that might arise. Priya honored her mother’s wish and joined Team India for the England tour, showcasing her incredible determination.
Although Priya initially played cricket for Rajasthan, she has been associated with Karnataka for the past two years after obtaining a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Rajasthan Cricket Association. Alongside her cricketing pursuits, Priya actively engages with her audience on social media, boasting a strong following of over 500,000 on Instagram.
