Jaipur: Rajasthan transport department said on Saturday that people won’t need to have police verification conducted when applying for driving licenses in Jaipur. It is applicable to those seeking driving permit for tourists vehicles also. The police verification had been made mandatory nearly five years ago when incidents of cab drivers assaulting woman passengers came to the light. However, officials said that the norm didn’t fulfil its purpose, so it is being withdrawn.

The orders to do away with the police verification requirement were issued by additional chief secretary Shailendra Agarwal.

As per the orders, Regional Transport Offices and District Transport Offices will now be able to issue driving licenses in transport category without police verification for the applicant’s character.

“The department had made it mandatory for applicants to have a police verification conducted nearly five years ago. It has caused delays in issuing drive license because the verification takes a lot of time. It was not only increasing pendency of driving license applications, but also making it difficult for people. We had received several complaints about this, so we have decided to do away with this necessity,” said a transport department officer.

The incidents of sexual assault by cab drivers had led the department to step up the scrutiny of the applicants.

“However we found that the verification process doesn’t meet the purpose,” said the officer.
