Jaipur: The Rajasthan government has decided that only registered consumers will continue to receive 150 units of free electricity under the Chief Minister Free Electricity Scheme. The new guidelines, formalized under the Congress administration, will link the benefit to consumer registration and solar subsidy eligibility.

According to officials, the revised policy aims to streamline subsidies and curb misuse. Around 1.04 crore registered domestic consumers will be eligible, while unregistered users will not receive any benefit until they complete the official registration process. Consumers already registered under the earlier scheme will automatically continue to receive free power for up to 150 units per month.

The new framework also brings changes to the state’s solar energy subsidy program. Under a joint arrangement between the central and state governments, consumers will receive a ₹50,000 subsidy for solar installations, along with the continuation of the free power scheme. Those who install rooftop solar systems and generate electricity equivalent to their consumption will receive additional financial incentives from both the central and state governments.

Officials at Jaipur Discom said the change reflects a “policy-level decision” by the government to rationalize subsidies. The decision is expected to reduce the financial burden on the exchequer while promoting renewable energy adoption.

However, new electricity consumers may not immediately benefit. Discom authorities clarified that consumers who obtain new connections after the implementation of the revised policy will need to register afresh before becoming eligible for free units.

The government estimates that nearly 17,000 additional consumers will qualify for subsidies under the updated plan. The benefits will include up to Rs 50,000 in solar incentives and free electricity for the first 150 units of consumption per month.

Officials also confirmed that households consuming more than 150 units will continue to pay normal tariffs for excess usage.
