JAIPUR: The mining department has cancelled the online process for allotment of leases for gravel mines in the state.

The mining department had recently invited online bids for 22 new gravel blocks mining leases. However, the auction scheduled for December 27 has been cancelled by the department. The Congress government had initially announced mining leases of up to one hundred hectares of mining blocks in their budget plans. But due to a change in government, the process will now be restarted.

The cancellation affects Tonk, Bhilwara, Rajsamand, Beawar Jalore, and Nagaur where these leases were supposed to be allotted. There have been reports suggesting that illegal mining is already taking place at some locations marked by the mines department for gravel mining.

It is expected that once the new cabinet is formed under the new government, they will review and proceed with the allotment process. The gravel mining blocks are situated on the banks of Banas River and Loni River. It was believed that after these new leases were allotted, gravel would become more readily available at cheaper rates.
